Carrie's Pick

This hot little number is my choice for today! This SKORCH'n dress will surely light up any holiday event this season!

Monday, November 20, 2006

I love it! You will too!

My picks today come from Victoria's Secret, and Sephora. My first pick is from Victoria's Secret. Seriously girls. This lip plumper works. I use it as a base before I put on my other lip glosses, lipsticks, or powders. It makes your lips tingle and gives it a fuller plumped out look. Sounds strange, but it really does work! Try it, let me know what you thought!

Quick Tip: Yes, I do put some eyeshadows on my lips, and so should you! It's a killer trick. Try putting your favorite lipstick looking eyeshadow on your lips, then top it with a gloss! It works as a great lipstick, and people will be asking about your lipstick the whole time you wear it!

My second choice is this eye wand duo that comes from Victoria's Secret. Victoria's Secret sells it for $20, but to be quite honest, I buy it at Sephora for about $12. There are so many different looks that you can produce with this bad girl! I've used it in dramatic ways, punk looking ways, classic chic and so much more! I even use the bronze portion as a lip gloss, with that lip plumper over it! This eye shadow goes on as a liquid but dries as a satin like matte. Great stuff!

Jessica's Must Have Items!

Jessica's Pick!
Current color mood: RED

Click on images to view products at vendor's website.
If I were stranded on a desert island, and could only have 2 things with me, I would have to have a fabulous handbag and my Clinique eye shadow primer (touch base). I did live life before without these two wonderful items - but NO longer.

Lets start with a must have handbag (left), my current pick, and this changes frequently with my mood, is this beeeutiful red Guess handbag! It comes in 3 colors and is under $40 - which is very important, because love handbags I do - but pay over $40 I do not! Only because my mood changes so often with which handbag I really love, that I can't afford to buy the $300 Coach handbag because in 2 months, on to the next one I am!

So, my second must have, Clinique eye shadow primer. Rewind, umm say 2 years, I would put foundation on my face, ooohh, beautiful blank canvas right? Then add my newly purchased Cover Girl eye shadow. The one I seriously spent 40 minutes deciding which color would be absolutely perfect (no need to buy 2 at $7 each when only one would fit in my tight budget). I very carefully apply my $7 eye shadow with my $14 eye shadow brush, walk out of the house feeling like Mia Tyler, only to see that 2 hours later, my eye shadow is creased! UGH - the insanity! I thought, there must be some way of getting eye shadow crease-proof! Then I found out, eye shadow primer (or touch base). After a trip to the Clinque makeup counter at my local Meier&Franks (now Macy's), I'm officially in love with Clinque's eye shadow primer. Trust me, I'm the queen of all frugal shoppers, and this $13 lasts me around 4 months and is the best $13 I spend on my makeup supplies. There are many brands on the market, I'm sure they all work, but I'm here to personally certify Clinique eye shadow primer numero uno! Try it girls, trust me, you'll love it! Even makes $.99 eye shadow stay on all day!

Let me know your tips! Comment away ladies - comment away!

Are you model material? Read on!

I get tons of E-mails everyday from both women and men asking me if they are model material. I also get a bunch of well wanted model applications everyday from potential Skorch Models. Although it is my opinion that beauty can be found in all shapes, sizes, colors etc... It is not my opinion that everyone can be a model. Just like if someone can carry a tune at karaoke, it doesn't mean that they should run out and make an album. Or just because I can bandage my kids when they are scraped up from a fall, it doesn't mean that I should be a doctor. Just because you are beautiful, it doesn't always mean that you have what it takes to become a model. There is so much more to modeling than simply having a pretty face or a great body.

I think a lot of people don't realize that when you are a model, you are a product. A model is used to sell something. Whether it is an emotion, an article of clothing, a hair style, a beauty product or a car, models are used to sell an idea to the consumer. Models are not used to sell themselves. The consumer can identify with the model because of an emotion that is portrayed or "sold", and if that model is seen enough the consumer can feel like they have formed some sort of emotional "bond" with the model because of how well that model has sold the product. But even when the consumer bonds with the model on an emotional level it is really that the consumer is sold on an idea, not the actual model.
When a company looks for a model, they are looking for people that can sell their product effectively. The model must be well polished physically, with very little need of editing. (This is another blog entry.) The model must have smooth and supple skin, (With very few blemishes.) must be of a certain height and shape, have facial and bodily qualities that are unique and appealing to the consumer. The model must also know how to move and pose appropriately, hopefully with very little direction. The model also must be able to convey the appropriate look and emotion that will sell the product the consumer wants. It all sounds so cold and unglamorous, but it's true! I think this is one of the reasons why girls grow up with such poor self perceptions is because they believe that they too should be the product themselves, instead of grasping the concept that models are simply there to sell. (But false self perception is another blog entry)

People don't realize how much work goes into being a great model. Usually the viewer believes that a model just sits there and looks pretty, because what they see is a beautiful image that is still. The truth is that most models have excellent muscle control, and are able to pose and hold poses for extended amounts of time. What you see in print looks easy, but for most people, holding these poses for extended amounts of time would make a novice model very sore and tired by the end of the day! Modeling kind of reminds me of yoga, but for hours and hours on end, while trying to look perfect and achieving that "life in the eyes" look 100% of the time. (Sometimes I wonder. Is that a "life in the eyes" look, or is that just tears? LOL)

I think it's interesting how women and men are wired so differently. Men are naturally visual creatures, while women are naturally emotional creatures. Isn't it interesting that print captures the attention of both the visual and emotional? Done properly, print images are very effective. Women, who are naturally emotional creatures, are attracted visually to images that appeal to their emotional nature. This is why we crave magazines, fashion, makeup ads and perfume ads so much! Print is an amazing tool that speaks to the girl in all of us! Media is not only alluring, daring and seductive, but it also appeals to the inner needs for us women to bond through our femininity! It's only natural that most of us secretly (or openly!) dream of being a model from the time we are little. I believe the same to be true for men, but in a different form.
This is just something to ponder before asking if you have what it takes to be a model. I can't answer that, but I certainly am interested in seeing if you do!

I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

SMOOCH NOISE!!

Who sells clothes for that cheap and gets away with it? I feel guilty! I really do! lol I feel like we shouldn't let anyone know about this little treasure of a website, and keep it all to ourselves! But we couldn't do that! We'll let you in on our secret because we love you all so very much. Besides, who said great fashion has to be expensive? Not us, that's for sure!

Great fashion finds in Canada? That's right!

Ok, Jess here, I found the coolest shop online just now. I never really thought about shopping at internet stores based in Canada, but I'm starting to think that I'm on to something. There are two stores predominately catering to the plus size girl, Penningtons and Addition-Elle. Peningtons is catering more to 40somethings, while Addition-Elle is more towards 20 something. Check them out and let us know what you think or if you know of any other great finds across the border.

Here's my "Canadian" pick (to the left). Check out the store at www.addition-elle.com. They carry sizes 14-26.

Attention Music Freaks!

Hey Music Freaks! This is Carrie. I don't know about all of you, but for me, music is really the soundtrack of my life. Here are three bands/artists that I can't stop listening to. Take a listen; let me know what you thought! Also, if you have some music picks that you want to have me listen to, let me know!!! Post the image of the band that you are listening to in the comments, and the bands name, with the url of how we can listen to them!

A lot of you have never heard of her, and if you have she's totally rocking your world too. You've probably heard her music in soundtracks to movies, but never realized who she was. Well now you know. The name of the band is "Plumb". The lead singer is Tiffany Arbuckle Lee. You can find her online at www.plumbinfo.com, or on myspace at www.myspace.com/plumb. Plumbs latest album, Chaotic Resolve can be found at stores nation wide. I'm tellin’ you folks. Her lyrics are thought provoking and raw; her music is articulate and versatile. Her sound varies from an "Evanescence" feel to pop feel including techno/club.

My next music pick is "Regina Spektor". Regina's latest album is "Begin to Hope". This lady has a really cool and eclectic sound. Her sound kind of reminds me of a Pop meets Symphony meets Broadway. How on earth does someone pull that off to where people actually WANT to hear it? Check her out, and you'll know why I can't stop listening to this genius. You can find Regina Specktor in stores nation wide, as well as on the internet at www.reginaspektor.com and www.myspace.com/reginaspektor.

My final pick of the day is "Shiny Toy Guns". This is the kind of music I'll put on my iPod when I want to listen to a hot revamp of the 80's. Seriously, these guys are simplistic genius! I swear, after one hour of listening to this band and you'll not only be rocking out to them, but you'll also be trying to hook yourself up with all of the latest glam looks! Don't forget to take pictures of those Shiny Toy Guns inspired looks, and post them on myspace! Tell you what. Person with the best Shiny Toy Guns look gets a free digital painting by yours truly!!! Ok, so first you have either pick up a copy of their latest album "We Are Pilots" at any music store, or listen to them on their website: www.shinytoyguns.com or www.myspace.com/shinytoyguns.

Remember! Go listen, get glammed out, take your pictures and post them in my comment section on Skorch Magazine’s myspace account. www.myspace.com/skorchmagazine

Must Have Alert!

Jessica's Daily Pick:

Oh my gosh I'm in LOVE with this coat! If you do not have a coat for the stormy weather, you have to head to Alloy.com! Look what we found....Only $89.50! Girls, buy this up, because I'm sure it's going fast!

Carrie's Daily Pick:

Seriously Girls. One stop at this website and I was absolutely head over heels in love. You must visit this site.. and often. This site might not carry a line of curvy clothing (yet), but I'll tell you, Trouble Girls carries accessories that your inner diva will long for. They are evil.... In a grrrrreat way!

SO this is like posting a note that says "Don't push the red button", but I have to post it. Note: DO NOT go to www.troublegirls.com. This is NOT the site we are suggesting. The site you want to make sure you type in is the listed on my little plug. Thanks guys!

Plus size on TV?!

Yes, that's right...TV seems to be catching up with the curvy revolution as well. Seems that after MoNique's show was the #1 top rated show on Oxygen, other notable talk shows are taking notice.

Oprah recently had Crystal Renn on Nov. 7th, 2006 - if you missed it click here for the show info.

And, Tyra's is hosting the first "Thick and Sexy Top Model” on The Tyra Show to prove you don’t have to starve yourself to be a model. With the help of America’s Next Top Model’s Toccara and judges Mia Tyler, Ruben Studdard and Joshua Morrow. Be sure to tune into that show!

Plus Size is all the Buzz now!

Welcome to the curvy revolution. As a up-and-coming plus size fashion magazine, SKORCH Magazine hopes to shed light on more than just our magazine. I mean, when I go to the magazine rack, I buy - ohh - 1 of Cosmo, 1 of Vogue, and next week 1 of InStyle.

Amoung other plus size fashion magazines soon to be joing the ranks of printed magazine (not just online e-zine):
* Bombshell
* Amaze
* SKORCH
and others we probably havent' heard about yet.

But we ask you the shopper to help all our magazines keep and stay strong. Add our magazines to your subscription list - and Join The Curvy Revolution!

xoxo,
Jess & Carrie

Starting a Magazine - the True Story & Introduction

Hi we're Jessica and Carrie. We are the co-founders of SKORCH magazine.

The beginning:
It all started when a girl named Jessica and a girl named Carrie were taking the steps to start a fashion-forward magazine to represent and empower the curvy diva. These very creative and motivated women were getting ready to set the world on fire all by themselves...
Then, fate stepped in. Jessica was invited to Carrie's birthday bash, and Jessica thought, why not! The girls had fun and realized very soon that they were business soul-mates (if there was such a thing) and that their skill sets perfected complimented each other. And, they both had energy and enthusiasm for days!
Two and a half hours and one Applebee's meal later, Jessica and Carrie were united and SKORCH was born.

SKORCH Magazine is the first arm of SKORCH Inc. Soon to follow will be a plus-size modeling agency, books, merchandising, clothing line, CDs, and so much more.

Our Mission: To empower every curvy diva by producing a credible fashion-forward magazine with articles from inspiring women from around the United States and tips and tricks on how to create the diva from the inside out.
